Spring In My Yard

Well everything is finally growing, I don't have any flowers yet, but they'll all be up soon. The trees are flowering, however, pink and white blossoms will soon cover the yard. We pulled the fire pit out last weekend, I love laying out on the lounger with a fire going in the summer. We have small lights that line the entire perimeter that go on in the evenings. I just love the yard, it was one of the biggest selling points of our home. I couldn't resist, despite the wallpaper!

Memorial Day at the Farm

This will be a pictureless post, but I do have many pictures to share later. My husband's grandmother moved to a new apartment a while back and didn't have room for most of her stuff. My brother-in-law needed his trailer that everything was being stored in, so at the end of the day the 8 of us were emptying it. As I was going through the trailer I found a box labeled School Memories, it was full of tidbits... paper clippings, notes, pictures, etc from when she went to school. I called my 3 sister-in-laws over and we decided to make a scrapbook for her for Christmas this year. As we went through drawers we found a box of 50th Anniversary memories, and boxes of pictures from hubby's dad and aunt growing up. All told we found 8 small boxes of pictures, clippings, notes and diaries for several years. We're going to scan everything in and make DVD's of it all for every family member. We also found old videos that we're going to transfer to DVD for everyone. It's going to be a very interesting Christmas, I really hope she loves it.

Monday Musings {5} - Memorial Day

In honor of Memorial Day:

"They are dead; but they live in each Patriot's breast,
And their names are engraven on honor's bright crest."
-Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"We cherish too, the Poppy red
That grows on fields where valor led,
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies."
-Moina Michael

"A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself."
-Joseph Campbell

"It doesn't take a hero to order men into battle. It takes a hero to be one of those men who goes into battle."
-Norman Schwarzkopf

"And I'm proud to be an American,
where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me."
-Lee Greenwood

Week In Review {7}

I fell terribly behind in my blog reading the past two weeks, I got the number of posts down to 458 before I finally closed my eyes and pressed the "Mark All As Read" button.

What that means is I don't have a lot for Week In Review, but I do have a few things.

Tamy at 3 Sides of Crazy posted her Bread Pudding recipes, just for me. I can't enjoy them quite yet, but I look forward to the day I can. All of her recipes sound delicious!

I discovered a new blog, PerfectBound, courtesy of Bloesem. It is perfectly lovely, I just love the elegant simplicity.

I spent a few minutes poking around MarthaStewart.com looking for the pumpkin pillows again, and found these Dime Store Games, complete with instructions to make them.

Nursery Basket Liners

Well here is my first basket liner attempt, 1 down 15 to go. I'm hoping they'll look nicer as I make more.

They are from the same fabric as the button-up window shades. I think I'll make the pumpkin pillows from solids, so there isn't too much striped stuff in the nursery.

A Bit About Me - Meme

I was tagged by Hana Mi to share a bit about myself.

1) What was I doing 10 years ago.

We had just moved to Ottawa, Illinois a few months earlier. We had left Grand Forks, North Dakota because our house had flooded and we were living in a FEMA trailer and it would be years before the house was finally livable again. We rented a house in the country for a while, but eventually had to find another house since the one we were living in was going on the market for more than we could afford. I loved the house in the country and was kinda sad to leave it, but we moved on again. So in May of 1998, I was working on unpacking in our new house in Illinois, working at a great law firm, and fighting with insurance to try to get our house in North Dakota fixed.

Boy am I glad all of that is in my past.

2) 5 things on my to do list for today.

Work til 12pm
Start pork roast for dinner
Figure out a pattern for the basket liners
Start sewing above basket liners
Make labels for the baskets

3) Snacks I enjoy.

Apples, Bananas, heck any kind of fruit. Yogurt. Wheat Thins.

4) Things I would do if I were a Billionaire.

Pay off all my debt
Buy my sister a house
Set up college plans for each of my nieces and nephews
Live every other 6 months in Iceland
Build a lovely but simple house with a art studio out back
Travel all over the world with my family
Teach and paint
Start a charity to benefit foster children

5) Places I have lived

Pittsburgh & Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania
Groton, Connecticut
Athens, Georgia
Hvammstangi & Hafnarfjodur, Iceland
Woodbridge & Alexandria, Virginia
Kalayan & Subic Bay, Philippines
Laurel Springs, New Jersey
Brunswick, Maine
Broken Arrow & Tulsa, Oklahoma
Charleston & Clemson, South Carolina
Jacksonville, Florida
Bonita, California
Grand Forks, North Dakota
Ottawa, Illinois

6) Blogger's I want to know about

Tamy at 3 Sides of Crazy
Kim at Forever Daisies
I'd tag Monique at Escape Hatch, but Hana Mi did that already :)

Mother's Day Gift

I promised that I would share what I got my mother for Mother's Day in my Etsy Mother's Day roundup post. Sorry I put it off until now. I just love this sparrow, it's called Cheery Sparrow from Daga Design. I tucked in other goodies, but this was the primary item. I'll definitely be buying more from them in the future. I also featured the The Classic Wise Owl by Daga Design in a Friday Etsy roundup. I have a miniature version of the owl on my bookcase, I love it.

Paper Dolls & Chemistry

Strange combination? This week I thought I'd share a couple of vintage items I've collected over the years. The book is "The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments: How to Set Up a Home Laboratory - Over 200 Simple Experiments", so if you have any kids that are interested in chemical reactions, how things work or just a little bored, you can probably find something fun to do in here. This book was actually banned in 1960 because the government was worried that it was too dangerous for the general public. Yet, it's all basic chemistry that we do in school today.

(You can download the book at the about.com page above)

I loved paper dolls when I was younger, and haven't found many in stores lately. So I found a bunch online a while back and now I'm going to share them with you. They were originally published between 1968 and 1972 in Sweden's ALLERS. Unfortunately, I can't give credit because I have no idea where I originally found these.

Plush Cuties

I'm planning on spending time this summer trying to learn how to sew, nothing too complex, but I'd like to learn to sew cute outfits for kiddos and to be able to make plush characters for them as well. I know some of these plush cuties are probably a bit more difficult, but they are all SO cute! I'm hoping with time I'll get there. In the meantime, does anyone have any recommended resources for a learner. I can sew a straight line :)

Pumpkin Pillows for the Nursery

I just love these pumpkin pillows from MarthaStewart.com
Pumpkin Pillows

I plan on using some of the leftover striped fabric from the button-up shades I made for the nursery and make a few:
BeehiveLamp

I'm also going to use it for basket liners for the toy baskets on the shelves. I don't sew much, so hopefully I'm not getting in over my head. I guess we shall see.

Oshie signs with St. Louis Blues

I know I usually stick to all the homey things like cooking, organizing, decorating, design type stuff, but there is much more to me than all of that. Probably the most surprising to people is my love of hockey! Well, my favorite player at UND signed with the St. Louis Blues yesterday afternoon. Before I was kinda split between the Wild (cause they are kinda local) and the Capitals (the first team I rooted for), but now I've got a new team. Seriously, watch T.J. Oshie play hockey and tell me you wouldn't change loyalties to continue watching and cheering for him.

Grace's Gift

My neice, Grace, turns 7 tomorrow, and this is what I put together for her birthday. It's a paper suitcase I picked up at Michael's and filled with pretty goodies, stickers, papers and I'll tuck in some ribbon, flowers and candy for her as well.

I hope she likes it. I try to put together things that I would have loved at her age.

Happy Birthday Grace!

Pin Box

This is the little box that I keep in my closet with hanger clips and safety pins. It's actually a white box that held a necklace at one point. When I was cleaning out my closet I thought rather than looking at the store logo on the lid I thought I'd pretty it up a bit and covered it with scrapbooking paper and embellishments. So cute!
